"I can't say enough how well Brittany has done as a leader in the classroom. The students love and respect her and I feel as though she's my teaching partner rather than my practicum student because of the poise and dedication and full time initiate she has demonstrated"

How can I enhance my students’ engagement with art history, engagement
with their own creativity in art,and engagement with critical thinking with
art in a creative way?

Statement of Focus
I will be creating, organizing, and running a weekly art club that is open to students in grade 3. We will be focusing on studying famous artists in order to help students develop artistic creativity and an understanding of the following: unity, purpose, subject matter, media and techniques, art appreciation, assessment, and analysis to explain how the formal elements of a work affect the subject matter. Focusing on these critical aspects of art will be enhanced through strategies such as gallery walks, critiques, discussions, entry and exit slips, exhibitions and displays, student demonstrations, and surveys. Studying these famous artists will facilities the students’ ability to work with art and critique art.
Rationale
The implementation of a student centered art club gives the students an opportunity to delve deeper into artistic practices and create a sense of community within our club. The study of famous artists and learning to appreciate the techniques and subject matter of these artists will encourage the students to take more risks in their artwork and show them that there is not one way to do art. I hope to generate the confidence in the students to explore and develop their own approaches. This is a great chance for me as well to try out new projects and practice flexibility, assessment, and working to get their artwork out into the community.
7 Habits
Habit 1 - Be Proactive - We learn to take full responsibility for ourselves, and to avoid the negativity of being reactive.
Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind - We think beyond the present to consider implications of our actions into the future. We encourage goal-setting and advance planning. We write and adhere to personal and classroom mission statements. Habit 3 - Put First Things First - We endeavor to set proper priorities, to make wise choices, and to keep a positive perspective. Our "first things" should never be at the mercy of second or third priority items. This habit requires time management, planning and putting our mission into action. Habit 4 - Think Win-Win - We try to exercise both courage and consideration as we seek mutual benefit. While I cannot always achieve a win-win situation, I can always think win-win. Habit 5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood - We practice empathic listening where we try to listen for understanding rather than to formulate our own response. This is a skill that requires sensitivity to others, empathy, and leads to great understanding and improved relationships. Habit 6 - Synergize - We choose to collaborate in order to achieve results that simply cannot be found on our own. Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw - We renew ourselves each day: Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual. |
Art club agreement based off of the 7 Habits
On the first day of art club the students and I had a discussion about the 7 habits and how they relate to the ARTIST rules for our club. We went through them all and I asked the students if each one was fair and if they would like to change or add anything to them. Going over the agreement gave the students voice in the rules for our club and set us up for a collaborative environment.

Assessment:
Pre assessment: the students and I had a rich conversation going over the survey below. We brainstormed together and I wrote down what the students said. I purposefully did not add too much to the conversation so that I could get an accurate understanding of where the students were at before art club.

On-going assessment:
Throughout art club my on-going assessment was formative and done through conversation; observation; thumbs up,sideways, or down; and think-pair-share.
Before our critique we went through the 4 simple steps we would use for our critiques and practiced as a class before we began. I also reminded the students how to be a great critical friend: be kind, be helpful, and be specific.

Post-assessment:
Although I could tell that the students have grown so much since the start of art club through their engagement and vocabulary they were using I wanted something tangible. Below are two different summative assessment tools that I used followed by some student samples underneath.
I was pleased to see that the boys and girls went from not knowing any artists to being able to tell me about one of their favorites and that they understood how to use basic art vocabulary to give positive comments and feedback.
